Shohei Otomo, aka Hakuchi, was born in Tokyo and graduated in Art from Tama Art University. His work is inspired by a mix of different influences, such as contemporary Japanese culture, using familiar subjects including samurais and geishas. The use of tools and illustrative techniques closer resemble those of Western artists than Asiatic.
Hakuchi's technique mainly involves a ballpoint pen and his illustrations are generally drawn in three colours: black, white and red.
His work was the subject of several expositions in the United States, where he is extremely popular.
